Winter is here and temperatures are dropping, and with that come the first colds and flu of the season. Kids are the most vulnerable due to their weaker immune system and lack of defenses needed to fight these viruses and to the ease with which these colds spread. To prevent this situation, take a look at the following tips:

A nutrient-rich, varied diet:

A healthy, balanced diet is the foundation for good nutrition. Fruits and vegetables in the diet help prevent colds, because they boost the immune system. Foods rich in vitamins A and C, such as eggs, milk, kiwis and oranges are our best allies. As with nutrition, we must keep our little ones well hydrated, with natural fruit juices and warm beverages, like soups.

Hygiene: teach them the basics:

Hygiene is a fundamental part of fighting viruses. Therefore, start by ventilating all rooms of the house every day between 20 and 30 minutes, so the outside air can refresh the room. Don’t forget to clean their toys! They are a source of contagion during play and become transmitters of viruses.

It is important for kids to learn certain hygiene habits. It will take you very little time and is highly valuable. Teach them to wash their hands well, to cover their mouth when sneezing and to use tissues. Always have a pack of tissues in their backpack! Values such as being generous and sharing with others are very positive in children’s manners, but be careful and explain that they do not need to share glasses, plates or silverware. If somebody has a cold, soon everyone else will, too!

Protect children’s skin during cold months:

Cold weather causes skin damage and irritation for children. Keep your child’s skin well moisturized with age-appropriate creams. You can also include disinfectant gels in your regimen.

Say no to excess clothing:

Bundling up your children will not necessarily make them better protected, but instead causes their body to be unable to properly regulate their body temperature with the temperature of their surroundings. However, make sure you cover their nose and mouth well, especially if there is a major change in temperature, and use cotton fabrics, which are more appropriate, since others can cause allergic reactions and irritation.

Finally, organize outdoor activities. Get to the park and play in nature! You will have an unforgettable day and breathe in clean, fresh air. Take advantage of sunny days since the sun is a source of vitamin D, which will help you all in the coldest season of the year.

Use these tips to enjoy a fun, happy and cold-free winter with your kids!
