During this week we have been working on our daily routines and habits in order to get used to our new schedule. We have been working every morning on many concepts during circle time through songs. We worked with number recognition in our calendar, days of the week, months of the year, seasons, and talked about the weather by looking through the window.
In Mathematics this week we introduced math bits by counting (0-20) and the book EntusiasMAT. We have also been identifying shapes círculo (circle), triángulo (triangle), cuadrado (square), and rectángulo (rectangle) to name a few.The number we are emphasizing this week is one. They quantified and recognized it. Also, they compared and sorted the objects that belonged together like a hive with bees. Another main topic was adentro/fuera (inside/out), where they jumped in a hula hoop and colored the coins in the treasure chest.
In Reading and writing, we introduced Ludi bits by seeing the letters, making the appropriate sound and associating it with a word that beings with it as well as the first letter of their names. We played games and completed art projects that required the children identifying their names. They placed stickers on the first letter of their names, found their names after their chairs, and looked to recognize their name in a role counting game. Lastly, they started practicing tracing uppercase letters A-F.
In Social Studies they learned all about Gérmenes (Germs). The children observed images of germs, looked for germs with lupas (magnifying glasses), matched the germs to their color bubble on a page, attempted to identify how many germs were in each set, colored germs, and cleaned baby dolls that got dirty.
In Chess, the children identified the peon (pawn) piece by pointing to 1 of 2 pieces.
First Grade Class
Welcome to Week 1. I am very proud of our first graders for getting through their first full week of school. Each one of your children has helped us to make our first-week enriching and fun. I am enjoying getting to know your children and am enjoying having them get to know me. Through fun and learning, I know first grade will be an amazing experience for all. Let’s take a look at week 1.
Students worked on reading, math and writing concepts during this first week of school. Students worked on place value, addition/subtraction, time, identifying long and short vowel sounds, spelling and how to identify when to use a period, question mark or exclamation point in a sentence. It was so fun to see how smart your children already are and how much smarter they will get as the school year goes by.
Our first graders have been learning about the artist Kandinsky and re-creating one of his art pieces. Students have used markers, crayons, colored pencils and paint to create their replica of a famous Kandinsky piece.
Our first graders got their iPads this week. In the iPad, each student found educational apps like Khan Academy, Sight Word Ninja, Chess, and ABCya to name a few. It is very important for our first graders to be introduced to education through an array of platforms because as you know Maryel is strong on Howard Gardener’s Multiple Intelligence and the implementation of the iPad in our classroom caters to us as educators knowing that each student has their own way of learning and being a visual learner is one way for our students to learn.
Welcome to the new academic school year 2020-2021. I am happy to send you our first weekly update and let you know that it has been a fun week with your children as we get to know each other and develop a classroom routine. We want to thank you for all the support and trust that you have shown for the Koalas team.
During this week Koalas were able to perform some of the following activities;
The children explored the classroom environment with free play and they learned their assigned spots. They also had fun creating their own sensory bags with pom poms and hair gel as well as they visited the gym and our playground. Koalas were also introduced to the classroom routine and were able to participate in circle time maintaining a safe distance between the students. Furthermore, Srta. Victoria introduced us to the book “¿Como van a la escuela los dinosaurios?” ” How do dinosaurs go to school?”.
Next week students will be practicing social distance greeting with their teachers and friends. They will be also introduce to higiene habits and the number 1.
I am happy to send you our class’ first Weekly letter. These letters are meant to share with you the activities we did in class, the concepts that were covered during the week, and to share news and announcements with you.
Last week your children got to learn a little about me and the classroom routines. They did various activities with their names to learn to recognize and identify the letters in them.
For Spanish and English days, we have been reviewing letter sounds. The following links could be a great tool to practice letter sounds at home:
On Monday we will start off as an English Day and Tuesday will be a Spanish Day, this rotation will continue throughout the year. Next week, your children will learn about the letter Ll. For math, they will learn about numbers 0-5 and understanding numerical value with quantity and word form. We will talk about change of season.

In Math: We practiced every day the counting numbers 0 to 10. They reviewed how to write the numbers 0 and 1. What means 0 and nothing. We were doing different activities with different amount of things, so they counted the number that we said. We were recognizing different shapes as a triangle, square, circle, star… with the foam shapes, and they were counting how many they had of each..
In Music: we were dancing and singing two different Spanish songs. The first one was about a cat, and is for that we made the cat mask. The second one is about a clown, so we gave everybody a red nose to sing and dance the song as a clown.
